1. Public Enemies
The shoot of the 1930’s-set blockbuster Public Enemies started last March in Chicago with Michael Mann as director, scriptwriter and producer.
Public Enemies focuses on the pursuit to take down infamous criminal John Dillinger and other public fiends Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. Famed actor Johnny Depp will play the role of Dillinger and is already setting the world in much anticipation. Christian Bale will star as Melvin Purvis, an FBI agent, and recent Academy Award best actress winner Marion Cotillard joins the superb ensemble as Billie Frechette.
The drama is based on the 1930’s federal war against prominent and influential law-breakers thus the rise of the country’s first police force. The movie’s script is based on the book Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of FBI, 1933-43. Mann wrote the non-fictional script by himself, branching into the tales of other notorious criminals such as Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow or better known as Bonnie and Clyde. Though the story is abundant of criminals, it doesn’t imply connections between them, focusing only on John Dillinger.
Along with Public Enemies, Michael Mann also has a set of other current projects such as spy thriller Edwin A. Salt with Tom Cruise, Empire with Will Smith, and Frankie Machine with Robert DeNiro. Other stars such as Giovanni Ribisi, Stephen Dorf, Lost’s Emilie De Ravin, C.S.I.’s Rory Cochrane and Almost Famous’ Billy Crudup will join the superb ensemble of Public Enemies.
2. Angels and Demons
Ron Howard is revving up a blockbuster adaptation of Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons who also gave us the controversial movie The Da Vinci Code. Tom Hanks is said to return as Robert Langdon, this time he finds himself entwined within the power of The Illuminati, history’s most powerful underground society, as he discovers the most valuable secrets of our time.
The Da Vinci Code scriptwriter Akiva Goldsman also wrote the script for Angels and Demons, also returning are the producers of the first installment of the series. Other stars included in the cast are Ewan McGregor who plays a powerful Vatican insider who assists Langdon and Ayelet Zurer who plays the female lead: daughter of a famous murdered physicist who follows the death of her father to uncover the truth behind it.
Angels and Demons will be distributed by Sony/Columbia pictures and is expected to hit cinemas on summer 2009.
3. Taking Woodstock
With numerous Academy Award-winning films, Ang Lee is set to direct the film adaptation of Elliot Tiber’s memoir Taking Woodstock: a True Story of a Riot, a Concert, and a Life. The story is about a closet gay man who works as a hotel manager slash interior designer and his role in making the greatest musical festival of all time happen.
Joining Ang Lee is longtime colleague and producing partner James Schamus who was also responsible for producing and writing the scripts of Brokeback Mountain and the $66 million blockbuster Lust, Cautious. Schamus is also the CEO of Focus Features which will distribute the movie.
4. Amelia
Academy Award Winner Hilary Swank will play the lead role in Amelia, a biopic of mysterious aviator Amelia Earhart who startled the world with her unexplained disappearance during an attempt to circumnavigate the earth in 1937. Richard Gere will play George Earhart, Amelia’s publisher husband. The story is said to revolve around the couple’s rocky relationship as Amelia pursues her career as a world-famous female aviating pioneer.
Directing the movie is Mira Nair, a talented director who has impressive skills on period films and was the one responsible for The Namesake. For now, the title rests on Amelia, but changes can be made any time from now until its release. Shooting for the film has started recently and will be released in just in time to bag Oscar awards.
5. The Dark Fields
The film adaptation of Alan Glynn’s The Dark Fields will be directed by Neil Burger starring talented actor Shia LaBouf. The plot revolves around a loser boy (LaBouf) who discovers a pharmaceutical drug that can make you smarter. The character receives a sudden heap of wealth, success and fame but soon experiences the lasting side effects of the powerful drug.
The movie’s lead Shia LaBouf has been consistently receiving major and noteworthy roles, such as in Transformers and Indiana Jones alongside Harrison Ford and Cate Balnchett. He also starred a supporting role with Keannu Reeves in Constantine. Long before bagging huge parts in Hollywood, he was the lead in Disney Channel’s Even Stevens, a comedy series about a suburban brat who deals with his uncanny family.
It is said that the movie will have aesthetics akin to Fight Club; dark, witty and intense. Producing the movie are Leslie Dixon and Scott Kroopf.
6. Old School Dos
Tod Phillips, The director and writer behind the first fraternity adventures of Mich, Beanie and Frank the Tank, is currently working on the script for Old School Dos. Scot Armstrong who co-wrote the first script is also said to be working with Phillips again.
The movie’s original cast Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Ferrel will all return to their respective roles ready to open their door to a new breed of weird and obnoxious college kids. Old School is probably every frat kid’s favorite comedy, every scene has buckets of beer and the women keep on coming. Also, the project is very exciting to see since everybody knows the first one is so hilarious that it’s pretty challenging to top off.
The project hasn’t started shooting yet and no updates regarding to which actors will join Mich, Beanie and Frank the Tank.
7. The Kind One
Ridley Scott, the man behind Bladerunner, Training Day and Matchstick Men and many other Oscar favorites, will direct The Kind One based on the book by Tom Epperson.
The period flick is set in the 1930’s about an amnesiac who finds himself working for a mobster nicknamed “the kind one”. The character then falls in love with the killer’s girlfriend, a situation that made everything much more complicated. Casey Afleck will play the lead, who also worked with the movie’s producer in his critically-acclaimed role in The Assassination of Jesse James by Coward Robert.
Critics and movie buffs are already anticipating how Ridley Scott will handle a period film. Based on his works, settling on a vintage setting might seem challenging, but the British director is sure to deliver The Kind One on a bed of Academy Awards. The movie will be released and distributed by Warner Brothers set to be out in fall 2009.
8. Edge of Darkness
The 1985 BBC six-hour mini-series Edge of Darkness is said to be adapted into a full-length feature by Casino Royale director Martin Campbell. Mel Gibson will play the lead Ronald Craven, a policeman who unearthed political secrets and systematic corruption in connection with the murder of his activist daughter.
Edge of Darkness is Mel Gibson’s return to the big screen since he last appeared in Signs and We are Soldiers in 2002. Gibson also directed the most controversial movie of all time, The Passion of the Christ, and the ancient suspense Apocalypto.
The movie’s writer William Monahan is said to have been fascinated by the dramatic and surprising nature of the mini-series originally written by Troy Kennedy Martin. Martin, who was clearly influenced by Britain’s political climate during the Thatcher regime, focused on the issues surrounding the nuclear industry. Graham King will produce the movie under his production GK Films.
Edge of Darkness will start shooting in Boston on August.
9. The Art of Making Money
DreamWorks bagged the deal for releasing future project The Art of Making Money, a film about the life of Art Williams, the alias of a notorious counterfeiter who printed more than $100 million worth of fake $100 bills.
Phillip Noyce, who directed The Bone Collector and The Saint, is in negotiations to direct the suspense with Frank Baldwin as prospect scriptwriter. The Art of making Money is said to be based on the criminal’s profile on Rolling Stone Magazine written by Jason Kersten, who’s also in works for a book about the counterfeiter’s life as a swindling criminal and his continuous illegal printing even after being caught by the FBI.
Brian Robbins will produce the film and production is expected to start in August.
10. Girlfriend Experience
Academy Award Winning director Steven Sodebergh will direct Girlfriend Experience, a feature based on a $10,000 a night prostitute’s vantage point. Brian Koppleman and David Lebien, the pair responsible for the screenplay of Ocean’s Thirteen will write the screenplay of this intriguing feature.
The recent scandal involving New York governor Elliot Spitzer and class-A escort Ashley Dupree has created a huge media frenzy and political issues causing the resignation of the governor, making this a huge factor into Sodebergh’s current project.Rather than casting Hollywood superstars, Sodebergh has announced that he’ll use adult movie stars for added impact.
The film will be produced and financed by Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner, partners for 2929 Entertainment through their label HDNet. Girlfriend Experience will be the second film that Sodebergh directs under their low-budgeted 12-movie contract. Though the films may be low-budgeted, the distribution to theaters, television, internet and DVDs will be wide enough to gain huge amounts of profits and distinction. No updates regarding casting and start of production are released yet. |
