Despite a rising worldwide epidemic of obesity there is currently only a very small number of anti-obesity drugs available to manage the problem. Medications used in obesity treatment can be divided into three general categories: the first decrease appetite, the second reduce absorption of fat and the third increase energy expenditure. Here we focus on the first group of drugs that are aimed at repression of hunger by affecting certain areas of the brain. Such medicines are called appetite suppressants and have been proved to be an effective measure to help patients reduce their food intake and thereby make it easier for them to keep to the diet.
Phentermine is today’s most prescribed medication in anti-obesity therapy. Its popularity bases on the low cost, availability and high potency. A more detailed information on this medication is given below.
Phentermine has an additional methyl group on the alfa-carbon atom what puts it to the group of amphetamine derivative drugs, though it is not amphetamine. In the slow-release form peak plasma concentration of the drug is achieved within eight hours and its half-life is about twenty hours.
There was a 36-week double-blind medical trial of phentermine (30 mg per day), in which patients were offered intermittent (1 month on and 1 month off), continuous drug and placebo treatments. Among 108 participants of the trial 54% percent were overweight; 44 patients failed to complete treatment, with six because of central stimulant effects. The results of the trial are as follows:
Continuous treatment - 12.2 kg
Intermittent treatment - 13.0 kg
Placebo treatment - 4.8 kg
The effects of intermittent and continuous phentermine treatments are rather intriguing, though in the later 36-week trial such drastic changes in body weight of the patients was not observed.
Today phentermine is put on prescription and is available both in drug stores and online. However, there is a non-prescription version of this drug - Herbal Phentermine, a 100% natural appetite suppressant with similar to phentermine effects. It is absolutely safe and helps patients to increase metabolism, control hunger, burn calories and boost energy.
Phentermine has been used in obesity treatment for almost 35 years and has shown to be an efficient short term medication. In conjunction with proper diet and exercise program this medication shows fascinating results within six months. The problem is to maintain normal weight and healthy diet after phentermine treatment. Unfortunately today there is no drug that can completely cure obesity and the figures are not comforting: about 1/3 of the starting weight is regained in a year after treatment and within 3 years the results leave without a trace.
Nevertheless it is absolutely practicable to become fit and healthy. Of course great tolerance and will are needed to overcome obesity. Phentermine is the very medication that can help you at the start of your way to healthy life-style.
